About IPL Hair Removal
Through a process of photo thermolysis, specifically filtered optical light, with a selected wavelength, combined with electric energy is absorbed by the pigment (melanin) within the hair shaft, and is transmitted towards the hair follicle and its feeding blood vessels. The combined energy results in the net effect of forcing the electric energy to stream preferentially to regions of the dermis, where the hair follicle and its feeding blood vessels are heated to a critical temperature. This creates a cauterising effect which completely and successfully destroys the hair follicles and the feeder blood vessels. The light energy is also able to penetrate the skin to reach the hair follicles at all depths. The light energy destroys the hair that is in the active growth phase at the time of treatment.
The older lasers (Ruby, Alexandrite, and Diode) systems have poor skin depth of penetration and are therefore unable to reach all hair follicles. Also, these older devices have difficulty treating darker skin and lighter hair due to the high affinity for skin surface pigmentation. This leads to pain, burning and pigmentatory changes.
In contrast however, the Intense Pulsed Light system very successfully targets the hair structure, and does not provoke any harmful secondary effects to the skin. The results are therefore painless and effective without any associated redness, burning, scarring or pigmentatory changes. Therefore, no anesthetic creams are necessary.
The IPL hair removal sessions are fast and comfortable. This allows the customer to have as many areas treated as they desire during each session. A course of treatments is required to achieve the best result, and this is determined by the hair growth cycle. Most people require between six-to-eight treatments. However, individual factors such as hirsutism (excessive, unwanted hair), hormonal imbalance (e.g. polycystic ovarian syndrome), and certain medications, can change the number of treatments required.

Frequently Asked Questions
1. How effective are IPL Hair Removal Treatments?
The Intense Pulsed Light System represents the most advanced technology currently available for permanent hair removal. It achieves extremely effective results. Due to the hair growth cycle and individual factors, a number of treatments are required at regular intervals to maximise results.
2. What advantages do the IPL + RF System have over other laser systems?
By emitting the optical pulse and electric pulse at the same time, the net effect is to force the electric to stream preferentially to the regions of the dermis preheated by the absorbed light, producing a greater and more focused thermal effect than a single pulse of light.
3. Do the treatments hurt and are they safe?
Treatments with the IPL System are highly specific for the destruction of hair follicles. As a result, other skin structures are unaffected, which means there is no pain, redness or burning associated with our treatments. The treatments are very safe and effective. Our clients who have tried other laser systems will attest to these features.
4. What areas of the body are treatable?
All areas of the body are safely and easily treatable (except the inner nose and inner ear). Some clients choose to treat many areas simultaneously, while others choose to treat only one area at a time.
5. Who is the best candidate for this type of treatment?
With the IPL technology, people with any skin colour (light, olive or dark) are safely and easily treatable. Any hair colour is treatable. Darker hair responds faster than lighter hair.
Pre-treatment Advice
- Stay out of the sun for at least two weeks before your treatment, and use a sun block with a protection of factor 30+ when exposed to sunlight.
- Do not use self-tan or solariums for at least two weeks before your treatment.
- Do not wax or pluck hairs for at least three weeks before your treatment. Do not bleach or use depilitators for at least one week before your treatment.
- Please shave (or clip) the area to be treated. This will make your treatment much more effective.
- Please ensure that you remove any make-up before your treatment.
- Some women may experience an exaggerated skin sensitivity prior to and during their monthly period.
Post-treatment Advice
- Gently cleanse the treated area twice-a-day with a moisturising soap or cream for several days. This will keep your skin hydrated.
- Redness is very uncommon following hair removal treatments. If redness does occur, it is unlikely to last more than one day. The redness is a natural response and you need not be concerned about it. Daily application of a moisturising cream will help soothe the skin.
Until the redness has completely subsided, do not:
- Apply make-up over the treated areas
- Use scented lotions or soaps, exfoliate creams (Retin-A and alpha-hydroxy), loofa sponges or scrub aggressively
- Use hot or cold water – wash with tepid water
- Shave
- Swim in pools or spas with multiple chemicals/chlorine
- Engage in activities that cause excessive perspiration.
